A full cognitive and academic assessment involves an analysis of qualitative information (e.g., background details, behavioural observations) and quantitative information (e.g., standardised assessment and cognitive test battery results) to identify a learner’s strengths and weaknesses and establish brain-behaviour relationships. It is NOT about trying to work out the IQ (Intelligence Quotient) of a learner.
The WJ-IV assessment battery offers a thorough and complete assessment of a learner’s cognitive and academic functioning to achieve diagnostic accuracy. It can be used to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in a learner’s cognitive profile. It can also be used to identify whether a learning difficulty (commonly referred to as a Specific Learning Disorder e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia) is a contributing factor to why a learner might not be meeting their academic potential.
The assessment includes:
WJ-IV Academic testing for reading accuracy, comprehension, phonics and spelling, mathematics, and written work.
WJ-IV Cognitive testing for general intellectual ability, verbal and non-verbal attention and reasoning, applied skills of visual and auditory memory, and information processing abilities.
WJ-IV Oral Language for listening comprehension, oral expression, phonetic coding, vocabulary, speed of lexical access, and auditory memory.
The full cognitive assessment report includes a detailed analysis of results, SLD diagnosis where appropriate, recommended interventions and in-class accommodations for identified learning needs, and for high school students, a Special Assessment Conditions (SACs) Declaration for NCEA assessments.
Note: ADHD and ASD are medical conditions, so a diagnosis must be made by a qualified medical practitioner or clinical psychologist.
